(San Francisco, CA)-February 23, 2015-Hotel Nikko San Francisco recently installed two Capstone C65 (65kW) microturbines to increase energy efficiency by simultaneously generating electricity for the building's power and thermal energy for the hotel's hot water supply. Known as Combined Heat and Power (CHP), or cogeneration, the exhaust heat captured from the microturbines is transferred to heat exchangers to be converted into thermal energy for hot water production.
The two low-emission, natural gas powered microturbines will generate over 1,000,000 kWh of electricity annually plus up to 830,000 BTU/hour for the building's hot water needs. The microturbines are grid connected and California Air Resources Board (CARB) certified. The system provides energy and hot water for the 25 story, 532-room hotel which eatures luxury suites, abundant meeting space, restaurants, a 140-seat entertainment venue, indoor swimming pool, and a fitness center.
The cogeneration system was sold and commissioned by Regatta Solutions, Inc. of San Juan Capistrano, CA. Regatta Solutions is the West Coast distributor of Capstone Turbine. Mark Hauenstein of Technical Designs, Engineer and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Project Administrator, provided project management for Takenaka Corporation (U.S.A.), the general contractor for the property. Installation was provided by Accu Temp Air.
As a nine-time EPA Energy Star Award Winner, Hotel Nikko maintains a long list of green initiatives that include water conservation, recycling, and composting. The cogeneration system allows Hotel Nikko to achieve several additional goals beyond reducing energy costs. With Capstone microturbines, the hotel can now maximize
operational efficiency, as CHP requires less fuel to produce a given energy output. Producing power on-site also avoids transmission and distribution losses associated with traditional power generation. As a result of burning less fuel to produce each unit of energy, the CHP system will reduce both air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. From a facilities standpoint, the microturbine system minimizes risk and decreases exposure to utility rate increases. "The microturbine performance is part of Hotel Nikko's overall strategy to reduce both our energy usage and carbon footprint," noted Mr. Hauenstein.
The Capstone C65 microturbine is a UL2200/UL1741 approved package with integrated turbine and power electronics that uses natural gas to produce electricity and low emission, usable exhaust heat. The microturbine uses this fuel to produce electricity in parallel with the utility grid as supplemental higher efficiency power. Integrated Combined Heat and Power (ICHP) modules connected atop the microturbine units capture exhaust heat and convert the thermal energy to produce hot water. Heat Exchanger controls maintain the required outlet water temperature. "Hotel Nikko's environmentally conscious leadership should be a model for every hotel as this smart power project adds to its legacy as a premier facility serving the city of San Francisco," says Steven Acevedo, President and CEO of Regatta Solutions.

2014 - Hotel nikko helps paint san francisco pink during breast cancer awareness month

Releases Private Label Anzu Bru Beer

ANZU BRU debut drawing rave reviews
SAN FRANCISCO (January 10, 2014) – Hotel Nikko San Francisco announced today, in conjunction with Working Man
Brewing Company, that Restaurant ANZU will debut ANZU BRU, a private label beer created specifically for

brewery," stated Joe Curran, VP Marketing for Hotel Nikko.

The Nikko is delighted to participate in San Francisco Beer Week 2014 (February 7 – 16), with a newly designed bar
menu paring beer and appetizers to showcase the hand‐crafted artisan BRU.
Consistent with Restaurant ANZU's commitment to sustainable and local
ingredients, partnering with a local brewery for its first exclusive recipe beer
was ideal, and the Working Man Brewing Company will be the featured
brewery at the 2014 International Life Cycle of Food Conference in October
Executive Chef and Food and Beverage Director Philippe Striffeler is pleased
with how well the beer pairs with the ANZU California Cuisine. "I am delighted

ANZU BRU has been so well received that Stine has already entered the pale
ale into the 2014 World Beer Cup in Denver. "We are excited to showcase our love of beer and commitment to

Restaurant Anzu Raises Bar for Hotel Dining in The West Coast's Culinary Capital

Long recognized as one of San Francisco's premier dining destinations, Hotel Nikko's Restaurant Anzu has unveiled a stunning new look and taste .

The restaurant celebrates the best of land and sea while staying true to the Asian influence for which it is famous. Guests can still look forward to a world-class sushi and raw bar showcasing exquisite fish from Japan and local waters but there is a new emphasis on prime meat selections. Waygu Beef Onglet, Kurobota Double Pork Chop, Filet Mignon, Ribeye and local Rack of Lamb will be complemented by a choice of delectable sauces and gourmet potato presentations.

"We're calling it Asian-inspired California Prime," explains Executive Chef Philippe Striffeler, who opened Anzu Restaurant in 1999. Having studied under Norbert Ziojen, Roger Vergé and Jean Troisgos, the Swiss chef applies classical techniques to create deliciously innovative cuisine.

Menu highlights will include starters such as The Rock featuring thinly sliced Wagyu Beef Coulotte cooked tableside on a sizzling Japanese river stone served with spicy Korean, kizami wasabi mustard and cilantro pesto sauces as well as Grilled Day Boat Scallops with pickled watermelon plank, quinoa upland cress and baby fennel.

Honey Roasted Sonoma Duck Breast with turnip puree, snow peas, baby bok choy and tamarind essence, Sesame Seared Alaskan Halibut with fava bean succotash and sansho pepper navel orange confit, and Lime Chile Seared Prawns served with a lobster demi and Himalayan truffle sauce, Japanese potatoes and spring leek salad are just a few of the entrees to grace the new menu.

Sexy Yet Elegant DÉcor

A bold palette of citrine, black and white highlighted by silver and lavender tones, backlit undulating water features, and geometrically-inspired furnishings in luxe fabrics lend a modern sensibility to the celebrated Union Square restaurant. San Francisco artist Reiko Muranaga has created a colorful series of watercolor paintings, which pay homage to Monet, to punctuate the vibrant space. Area rugs showcasing a series of single orchids and window shades incorporating natural bamboo pay tribute to Anzu's Asian heritage.

Jewel-like chandeliers and beaded pendant lighting, a woven black wall treatment and rich damask drapes framing view windows reflect the elegance of the grand hotel, with its soaring marble lobby.

"San Francisco is known for its dynamic food scene and we're creating a vibrant ambiance in which to showcase Anzu's exceptional culinary offerings. We believe dining should always be a special experience – beginning with a grand sense of arrival and ending with memories of a great meal paired with gracious service," comments Vice President and General Manager Anna Marie Presutti.

Angle Dunkelbergerof Sunrise Homes spearheaded the refurbishment of Restaurant Anzu. He has designed inviting venues within the hotel's signature restaurant, including an intimate private dining area centrally located between the lounge, sushi bar, and formal dining room. The dining room itself gains drama through the addition of oversized white banquets across its perimeter and a trio of chandeliers adorning its citrine inset ceiling. Anzu accommodates 135 people in high style.

Hotel Nikko San Francisco Receives Three Important Industry Awards

December 12, 2012, San Francisco
The general manager and two staff members of Hotel Nikko San Francisco were honored by receiving individual industry awards this year for their work.

Vice President and General Manager Anna Marie Presutti commented, "We are proud of all of our associates for the contributions they provide. To have their efforts recognized by the associations in our industry is tremendous."

Kevin Huang, a 15-year Housekeeping Department veteran, earned the 2012 Hotel Council of San Francisco's Unsung Hero Award earlier this year. Huang was recognized for his ability to identify and solve problems and his keen awareness of his surroundings. Earlier in the year, he spearheaded an initiative to improve the hotel's signage system to help guests find their rooms more easily; and by acting quickly when he noticed the carpet outside a guest room was wet, he was able to save the guest's belongings and prevent other guests from being affected.

In November, Group Sales Manager Kelly Merritt won California Hotel & Lodging Association's Stevan Porter Emerging Hospitality Leader of the Year Award. "Not only is she a superstar with her clients, consistently delivering great value and sensational experiences to their organizations, but Kelly is also prominent throughout the local community where she has made an impact with her philanthropic activities," Presutti commented. "You will find her volunteering time dishing meals up to the homeless at GLIDE Memorial, assisting at the San Francisco Food Bank, and even helping make dreams come true for Make-A-Wish."

In October, Ms. Presutti received the prestigious Legend Award from the Professional Convention Management Association's (PCMA's) Northern California Chapter. "Since the Association's members, all meeting planners, voted for this award, it makes me especially proud to receive it," Presutti said.

The Legend Award joins the many others in Presutti's trophy case that she has been given for awards and honors she has received since her 2006 appointment as the hotel's general manager. She has been named one of "The Most Influential Women in the Bay Area" by the San Francisco Business Times for six years in a row, and was chosen "Outstanding General Manager of the Year" for 2010 by the California Hotel & Lodging Association. She is the immediate past-president of the Hotel Council of San Francisco and serves on the Boards of the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl and the San Francisco Travel Association (previously known as the San Francisco Convention & Visitors Bureau).

Presutti noted, "It is gratifying to know that others take notice of true hospitality. To be acknowledged by the San Francisco Hotel Council, CH&LA, and PCMA for our associates' significant efforts is humbling, and the Nikko is truly honored to be represented in fine fashion by Kelly and Kevin."

San Francisco, January 9, 2012
The Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA), one of the world's leading organizations for meeting and event professionals, has selected Hotel Nikko San Francisco for its prestigious Annual Spirit Award. The Spirit Award honors an organization extensively involved in helping people in need. The award will be presented at PCMA's 56th annual meeting, January 8-11, in San Diego.

In its announcement of the 2011 award winner, PCMA explained its choice of Hotel Nikko San Francisco: "The relatively small number of employees at this San Francisco property have made a huge impact in the community, volunteering over 1,200 hours annually…. The total number of volunteer hours equates to nearly $50,000 a year, in company time, donated by the hotel - a major feat for a stand-alone property."

PCMA cited some of the projects undertaken by the hotel, including Project Homeless Connect, where employees interact with the homeless and prepare hygiene kits; Project Night Night, which helps homeless children sleep better by providing books, blankets and stuffed animals as comfort; and volunteer help for the Salvation Army, GLIDE Memorial Church, Florence Crittenton Services and San Francisco Parks and Recreation.

"We are delighted to receive this recognition from one of our industry's preeminent associations," commented Anna Marie Presutti, General Manager of the hotel and Vice President, Nikko Hotels International. "Our employees gain great satisfaction from their volunteer work, so PCMA's award is icing on the cake!"

Hotel Nikko Earns The Energy Star Award For The Ninth Time

Hotel Nikko San Francisco has earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA's) prestigious ENERGY STAR for the ninth time. In 2003, Hotel Nikko was the first hotel in San Francisco to be awarded the ENERGY STAR, since then it has continued to take numerous steps to better its stewardship of the environment and further embrace going green.

ENERGY STAR, created in 1992, is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. Initiated as a voluntary labeling program designed to identify and promote energy efficient products, ENERGY STAR works as a partnership of government and industry that offers businesses and consumers energy efficient solutions, protecting the environment for future generations. Qualifying for the ENERGY STAR requires rating in the top 25% of facilities in the nation for energy efficiency. Commercial buildings that earn the ENERGY STAR use an average of 40% less energy than typical buildings.

By managing energy usage in strategic ways across the entire property, Hotel Nikko San Francisco has improved its energy performance and made cost-effective improvements to its building. Some of these practices include sensors in guest room thermostats that turn the heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems to nominal levels when the rooms are vacant, motion sensors in Service areas that turn off lighting when the vicinity is not in occupied, LED and fluorescent lighting, and variable frequency drives in ventilation fans.

Hotel Nikko San Francisco has implemented not only energy-efficient solutions but also other environmentally conscious practices. For water conservation thel Nikko uses low-flow toilets which use air pressure to assist in the flushing of the toilet. This allows the hotel to save 2.1 gallons of water with each flush, amounting to over 2 million gallons of water being saved every year. Its in‐house laundry program utilizes a re‐use system whereby the always fresh second and third rinse cycles are saved, filtered and used for the next first wash cycle, saving thousands of gallons of water each day. The use of "green cards" allows guest to participate in the green movements, providing the option of requesting whether or not they want their linens cleaned.

Along with these savings the hotel also recycles paper, cardboard, bottles, cans and wood pallets. All unused food is composted nightly, minimizing waste. Old useable towels are donated to charity, not only keeping the waste level down, but also helping those in the community. Also, Hotel Nikko San Francisco is a member of the Tenderloin Neighborhood Development Corporation (TNDC) which donate old furniture, carpeting and supplies to local charities and people in need.

In addition to continually seeking ways to improve water and energy conservation as well as waste management within the hotel, hotel colleagues dedicate more than 1,000 hours to assisting the local community. Outreach programs include serving lunch at Glide Memorial Church and volunteering with the Salvation Army, Florence Crittenton Services and Adopt-A-Family.

Hotel Nikko San Francisco is proud to have been awarded with the national symbol for superior energy efficiency and environmental protection: ENERGY STAR. For the better part of a decade Hotel Nikko San Francisco has been a leader in energy-efficiency and will continue to uphold its leadership of being an environmentally conscious hotel.

Hotel Nikko Join Efforts With San Francisco Hoteliers In A Million Dollar Mission

The month of July was very special for Hotel Nikko San Francisco. During a thirty day city-wide fundraising campaign, the Nikko had the honor to be part of the efforts of one of San Francisco's most impressive single-industry-supported fund-raising initiatives: The Million Dollar Mission.

Partnering with the Hotel Council of San Francisco, the Lymphoma and Leukemia Society launched this campaign to raise funds for vital research for a cure. Working collectively, the San Francisco hospitality and service industries joined forces to help provide financial, educational and social services for individuals affected by blood cancer and their families. The campaign goal was to raise $1,000,000 dollars.

As the city's second largest employer, hotel workers at every level participated and lent support through various 'back of the house' initiatives including: Spare Change Days, Sweets & Treats (bake sales), Steward Sales (internal garage sales like no other) and internal raffle/drawings. At the Hotel Nikko San Francisco, the employee's Baking Sale raised $876.00; and the stewarding sales raised $622.00 Showcasing the vibrancy of America's favorite city, dozens of one-of-a-kind experiential hotel packages were auctioned on-line with proceeds benefiting the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, with the Nikko participating with a special suite vacation program that raised $1,325.00.

Altogether, the Hotel Nikko San Francisco was honored to raise through its employees and guests $15,200.00 for the Lymphoma and Leukemia Society (LLS).

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society ® (LLS) is the world's largest voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancer. The LLS mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. LLS funds lifesaving blood cancer research around the world and provides free information and support services. Founded in 1949 and headquartered in White Plains, NY, LLS has chapters throughout the United States and Canada. To learn more, visit www.lls.org or contact the Information Resource Center at (800) 955-4572, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET.

This 2012 focused campaign is an additional layer to the Hotel Council's long-term support of several philanthropic programs and organizations. The Hotel Council organizes philanthropic events that support scholarships for hospitality management students attending Bay Area colleges and universities. The Council also supports the work of the San Francisco Hotel/Non-Profit collaborative which transfers excess goods, supplies, food and equipment from hotels to community based non-profit organizations

Hotel Nikko San Francisco Consolidating In-Room Devices with Bittel UNO

As part of its 25th Anniversary celebration and ongoing renovation program, the Japanese-influenced hotel is replacing individual in-room phones and alarm clock/radios with an all-in-one unit to better complement the minimalistic aesthetic and fulfill guest needs

San Jose, Calif.(October 25, 2012)
The Hotel Nikko San Francisco, located at 222 Mason St., is celebrating 25 years of hospitality service this month. While the property's owners, management team and flag have remained constant over the years, enhancements to the 532-room property are ongoing, and furnishings, fixtures and equipment are always changing to meet guests' demands. Recent enhancements include adding the all-in-one Bittel UNO Media system that features a mobile phone charging station, multi-input audio player, clock radio with alarm, and full-feature guestroom phone in one unit.

"When it comes to in-room equipment, less is more, especially for the Nikko Hotel chain," said Joe Curran, Hotel Nikko San Francisco VP of Marketing. "To better complement the brand's aesthetics, we opted to replace multiple guest electronics in the room with a streamlined product that unclutters the nightstand and adds more purpose to the guestroom phone."

UNO Media from Bittel is a powerful conduit for improving guest satisfaction. In addition to providing a direct channel for inhouse communications, the unit is the ideal amenity to charge and play mobile devices for guests' enjoyment and convenience. Featuring an audio player interface, two USB ports and standard line inputs, guests can easily plug and play their iPhones, iPods, Androids or other MP3 player and listen to their music through premium speakers for a high-end audio experience. UNO Media boasts a streamlined design, small footprint, 10 programmable guest-service keys, large printable faceplate area for branding and dialing instructions, message notification, and an easy-to-use alarm clock radio with FM tuner.

"Cost savings and design aesthetics aside, we are finding that UNO Media also provides some unconventional benefits," Curran said. "Guests are commenting on UNO Media's superb sound quality, and housekeepers are finding that they are spending less time searching for and delivering mobile phone or iPod chargers because the cables are hardwired to the device itself. This is a convenience to guests and it enables our housekeepers to remain focused on more important tasks."

"The Hotel Nikko San Francisco's mobile website duplicates the programmable UNO keys on in-room phones, providing consistency and convenience," Curran said. "In this way, guests can order room service or call housekeeping, the bell stand or concierge directly from their iPhone or android exactly as they would from their room phones. Understanding the dependency that travelers have on their mobile devices, our guests can even use their mobile phones as the TV remote control."

In November, the Hotel Nikko San Francisco will update all guestroom televisions, replacing existing 42-inch units to newer models. Other recent enhancements include new softgoods and casegoods in rooms, and the addition of a 100 megabyte pipe to deliver higher broadband speeds in rooms to support guests' demands for streaming video, movies and games. "We are extremely proud to partner with Bittel Americas," Curran said. "Like Hotel Nikko, they strive to deliver quality products and five-star service to guests."

Nick Steigelman, Bittel VP of Business Development, concurred. "Bittel is continually enhancing its product line to meet the ongoing and every-changing demands of today's travelers," Steigelman said. "Our UNO Media series offers an aesthetically pleasing product just right for every hotel. By combining a audio player interface to support today's mobile electronics with a full-featured guestroom phone and clock radio with alarm, UNO is helping properties like the Hotel Nikko San Francisco to save money while building guest loyalty and satisfaction. Bittel UNO is the one solution that pulls the needs of guests and owners together."

The Dapper Diner, Nov 5, 2012

1987 was an interesting year -- gas was under a dollar, the world population was nearing five billion, the stock market crashed, a storm of hurricane-like power hit Southern England killing two dozen, The Simpsons started airing as shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show, Baby Jessica fell down a well, the Golden Gate Bridge turned 50, Dianne Feinstein was the outgoing mayor of San Francisco, and the Giants lost the National League Championship Series in seven games to the St. Louis Cardinals.

Fast-forward 25 years to 2012 and gas is just under four dollars, the economy is a bit battered, Frankenstorm has stomped all over the northeast coast, The Simpsons is still on TV, and the Giants won the National League Championship Series in seven games against the St. Louis Cardinals on their way to a World Series championship. 1987 also saw the opening of the Hotel Nikko in downtown San Francisco, where it has remained a fixture. To celebrate its silver anniversary, ANZU, the restaurant on the Nikko's second floor, is offering a special tasting menu until the end of November.

A lovely looking roasted root salad of baby beets, parsnips, and turnips follows the soup. The flavors of the salad are muted, allowing for the schmear of Burrata to momentarily stand out. Unfortunately, once the small dollop of Burrata is gone, it is back to the now lonely salad and the blood orange vinaigrette. In my odd mind, eating the small and slippery vegetables and wirelike frisee is reminiscent to undoing a bra in the backseat of a car in high school. In the dark. While buzzed on Zima. The honeycomb is a nice touch, adding sweetness and crunch, allowing a comfortable amount of beeswax to sneak onto the plate.

Redemption comes in the form of the main course. Diners are given the option between a Wagyu beef onglet and a Misoyaki smoked black cod. If you are really hungry, go for the sizeable onglet, but if you are looking for the more flavor satisfying choice, go with the black cod. The beef dish, being a Wagyu hanger steak, was juicy when prepared medium-rare, but definitely on the tough, but manageable side. The gritty Salinas purple cauliflower mash did not help, but the anis shallot sauce and leek fondue kept things interesting while the generous serving of meat easily sates one's hunger. The cod on the other hand is beautifully delicate and the better dish. The misoyaki's saltiness and sweetness counters the savory Honshemenji mushrooms and truffled Yukon gold potatoes, like a seesaw of flavors engaged in a perfectly delightful rhythm on your tongue. The firm squash and potatoes ground the otherwise buttery and elegantly cooked fish.

Lastly, paying homage to one of San Francisco's most famous residents, dessert is known only as "The Fog." A dry ice and water garnished plate serves as a playful setting for a dark chocolate mousse cake filled with banana cream. The cake is smooth and bitter, like that guys who wore Drakkar Noir in 1987, while the cream filling is sweeter than both your United Colors of Benetton of shirt and Z. Cavaricci pants combined, but in a good way. While there are certainly a few misses with the 25th Anniversary menu at ANZU, the soup, cod, and dessert are enough to make it a meal one should check out, particularly with its price and limited availability. Plus, if trends continue, the hotel and restaurant's 50th Anniversary will see a world with close to ten billion people and gas at $17, meaning it will be a whole lot more expensive to enjoy that menu and to get a seat at any restaurant.

I know that I can always count on the Hotel Nikko family to invest themselves and their time to help others in need."

During October performances at Feinstein's at the Nikko, located within Hotel Nikko, guests indulged in Kanpai Lounge's pink drink specials - Strawberry Fields or Coconut Raspberry Martini - before and after show time, as well as during the new Broadway Bingo at the Nikko on Wednesday nights. In order to bring further awareness to the cause Hotel Nikko had illuminated with pink lights outside, and was sprinkled with pink throughout the interior and staff uniforms throughout the month.
